Bed Runners

A bed runner (also called a bed scarf) is a long, narrow piece of fabric placed across the foot of the bed, over the sheets or comforter. It adds colour, texture and a finished, hotel-style look to your bedding. It also protects the comforter from dirt, shoe marks, dust and everyday wear, so the bedding stays cleaner for longer.

The runner’s width is usually 14 to 18 inches for a single or double bed, 18 to 24 inches for a queen bed, and 24 to 26 inches for a king bed. The length should cover the full width of the bed, plus a small drop on both sides. A common size is around 53x18 inches for a smaller bed and 72x24 inches or more for a queen or king. Measure your bed width first, then pick a runner that drapes 6 to 12 inches on each side.

Velvet and micro velvet give the richest, most premium look and suit festive and luxury decor. Satin gives a smooth, glossy finish. Cotton and linen are breathable, easy to wash and good for daily use. Jacquard, embroidered and quilted runners add pattern and texture. Choose velvet or satin for style and cotton or linen for easy maintenance.

Lay the runner flat across the bed, about one-third of the way up from the foot. Fold it lengthwise for a narrower look, or drape it casually for a relaxed style. Pick a colour that matches or contrasts with your bedsheet and cushions. Neutral runners suit minimal bedrooms, and bold or embroidered ones add a focal point. Pair it with matching cushions and pillow covers for a coordinated look.

Many cotton and polyester bed runners can be machine washed on a gentle cycle in cold water with mild detergent. Velvet, satin, embroidered and beaded runners are best hand-washed or dry-cleaned. Avoid bleach and high heat, and always check the care label first. Air-dry in shade to protect the colour and fabric, and iron on low heat if needed.

Wash your bed runner every 2 to 4 weeks with normal use, or more often if you use it around pets, kids or food. Because it sits on top of the bedding and is not in direct contact with your body, it does not need washing as often as sheets. Wash it at once after spills. With proper care, a good quality bed runner lasts for several years.

Bed runners are mainly decorative, but they are also practical. They protect your comforter or bedspread from dirt and scuffs, and they can be removed and washed easily. They are an affordable way to change the look of your bedroom without replacing the bedding. They also work well for festive decor, weddings and guest rooms.
